Customers purchasing a firearm must provide a valid government-issued ID, meet California Firearm Safety Certificate requirements, and present valid proof of residency when applicable. All firearm purchases are subject to background checks and must comply with current California state laws and regulations.

Documentation Required to Purchase a Handgun in California

To purchase a handgun in California, customers must provide the following documentation at the time of purchase:

1. Valid California Driver License or ID Card

A current California Driver License or Identification Card is required.

  • The name on all documents must match.

  • The address on all documents must also match.

  •  Documents cannot be expired, past due, or invalid.

 

2. Firearm Safety Certificate A valid Firearm Safety Certificate is required unless the customer qualifies for a state exemption.

 

3. Proof of California Residency : Additional proof of residency may be required depending on the type of identification presented.

Accepted Proofs of Residency

Customers may provide ONE of the following approved documents:

  • CCW Permit

  • Vehicle Registration

  • Utility Bill with Service Address (must be dated within the last 90 days)

  • Notarized Lease Agreement

Important Requirements

  • Documents must display the purchaser’s full name.

  • All documents must show the same residential address.

  • Utility bills must include a service address.

  • Lease agreements must be notarized.

REAL ID / Federal Limits Apply

If your California ID says “Federal Limits Apply,” you must also provide one of the following:

  • Valid U.S. Passport

  •  Certified Birth Certificate

Documents NOT Accepted as Proof of Residency

The following documents are not accepted:

  • Bank Statements

  • Tax Statements

  • Mortgage Statements

  • Cell Phone Bills

  • Car Insurance Documents

  • Credit Card Statements

  • General Mail

  • DMV Brown Card

  • Military Spouse Card
